Scriptural Criteria for Discernment of the Prophetic
Scripture provides several criteria for testing prophets and prophetic words.
- True Prophets of YHWH and Prophetic Words from YHWH must always 100% agree with the full counsel of Scripture and cannot contradict any single place of Scripture or anything YHWH has already said or done. (Num 23:19, 1 Ki 13:1-24, Mal 3:6, Heb 13:8, James 1:17)
- True Prophetic Words from YHWH come only by YHWH explicitly commanding the person to speak. They do NOT come by guessing, or by experimenting, or by trying, or by wanting, or by imagining. Everything which YHWH has NOT specifically commanded one of His Prophets to speak is “a false vision, worthless divination, and deceit of their heart.” (Deut 18:23, Jer 14:14, Ez 13:1-23)
- True Prophets of YHWH are actively walking in and declaring repentance and obedience to Torah – YHWH’s loving instructions for how we are to live in His Ways. (2 Ki 17:13, Is 30:8-18, Eze 22:25-28, Dan 9:4-10, Zeph 3:1-4, Zec 7:11-12, Matt 7:15-23 in Yahushua’s own words):
| Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. - True Prophetic Words from YHWH will always be specific enough to be verified within the timeframe of their context and will have NO part or aspect that expires or does NOT come to pass or is too vague to verify. (Deut 18:20-22, 1 Sam 3:19-20, Eze 12:22-28)
- True Prophetic Words from YHWH will NEVER portray, point, or lead people towards a god that is even slightly different than YHWH the God of Israel in character, nature, essence, and being, even if those words are accompanied by legitimate miracles or signs or wonders. (Deut 13:1-11).
- True Prophets of YHWH and Prophetic Words from YHWH will NEVER imply or teach or point to or lead people towards a different Good News or different version of Yahushua Messiah than the one described throughout the entire Scriptures (in the Torah, in the written Prophets, in the Writings, in the “Gospels,” and in the Epistles). (Luke 24:27, 44, John 1:45, Acts 26:22-23, Gal 1:8-9, 2 Cor 11:3-4, Rev 19:10)
- True Prophets of YHWH and Prophetic Words from YHWH will NEVER be merchandized, or in any way profited from financially or materially. (Prov 23:23, Jer 5:26-31, 8:9-11, Eze 22:25-28, Mic 3:9:11, Acts 8:20, Tit 1:10-11, 2 Ki 5)
- True Prophets of YHWH have received direct communication from YHWH where He has made Himself known to them personally – not in vague symbolism that needs to be “interpreted,” but in direct personal communication and clarity. (Num 12:6)
- True Prophetic Words from YHWH can NEVER be “tapped” into on-demand or initiated of human will or triggered by human desire. They cannot be restrained or held back by the true Prophet of YHWH. (Jer 6:11, 20:9, 23:9, 2 Pe 1:19-21)
- The most common reaction of the people to a FALSE prophet and a FALSE prophetic word is receptivity and acceptance by the masses, because of its positive “peace, peace” message and avoidance of a call to repentance. The most common reaction of the people to a True Prophet of YHWH and a TRUE Prophetic Word from YHWH is rejection and persecution, because of its upholding of YHWH’s standards and calling to repentance. (1 Ki 22, Jer 6:10, 20:7-8, 25:4-7, 26:4-8, Matt 5:11-12, Matt 23:29-37, Luke 6:26, Acts 7:52)

Modern examples of FALSE Prophetic Words
The intent here is to practice discernment by applying the Scriptural criteria to modern “prophesies.” The focus is NOT on the prophetic “personalities” tied to these prophesies, although it’s safe to say that any “prophet” on this list who has spoken ANY word presumptuously in the name of the LORD, which violates 1 or more Scriptural test, is also a false prophet and should not be followed or listened to or trusted. This does not mean I’m attacking that individual personally. Rather, this is a warning to all those who seek to love YHWH with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength: do not be led astray! The deception is only going to get stronger and stronger and the ultimate end-game for all these types of prophets and prophesies is a one world new age religion serving a god of man’s imagination and false messiah and a false anti-torah, anti-YHWH gospel.
